Alessandro Saturno: A.S.M.’s painting seems to halt halfway between owning and ultimate loss, between perception of the whole body and the Nevermore of vanishing, between the memory still settled at the bottom of the retina and the whole figure. Neither fort nor da, not appearing or disappearing , his works settle in the middle, in that formless state halfway between shape and its negation. It is all about picturing something situated in the transition phase, in the process of wading through a membrane-like elastic passage, where bodies begin to be what they were not. The figure, as soon as it gets taken in the unlikeness whirlwind, becomes a carousel of possibilities, a space where absence is overcome by a multiple presence, overwhelmingly filling this void. The meaning of this overwhelming liquefaction of the containing structures, of this flabby outflow of substance that pours and spreads, is the attempt to bring the life of the shape back to the shapeless, hallowed part and, at the same instant, through the intrinsic miracle of all the states of intense feeling that tends to correlate the two extremes of possibility – horror and beauty – consign it to the opposite side, that of the blazing beauty.
